What's It All About

This blog began as a side project when we opened Nook Eatery in 2009. In September 2012 we sold Nook, and sadly it now no longer exists. We have a new blog (see A Good Place to Gather). As always we remain inspired by the ingredients we use and the food we cook. This site remains purely as an archive of our three years at Nook Eatery and the recipes I created.

A Watermelon Summer Supper

When you come across an organically grown watermelon for R20 (approximately $2.50 equivalent) you grab it with both hands!  It was a life saver at the end of another scorching hot summers day.

If you have yet to try a watermelon, feta and basil salad, do it.  I love love love this salad.  Use the sweetest watermelon, a crumbly salty feta, the best quality aged balsamic vinegar, and a crack of black pepper.

adapted from Plenty by Yotam Ottolenghi

ingredients
4 cups large chunks watermelon
225g feta, cut into pieces
1/2 cup basil leaves, torn or whole
1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced

On a large platter, arrange the watermelon, feta, basil, and onion. Mix together.

Drizzle with extra virgin olive oil, aged balsamic, and season with freshly cracked black pepper.
